Attachment and Positive Discipline
Description:
This training reviews the definition and the neurobiology of attachment. In addition, the types of attachment as well as their short-term and long term impact on child and adult well-being are addressed. Ways in which early childhood professionals can support secure attachment are discussed. Often times, discipline seems to be viewed as going against a healthy parent-child relationship. This presentation focuses on the use of positive discipline and how it can support a healthy caretaker-child relationship.
Participants will learn skills and strategies including:
- How to define attachment and name the 4 components of attachment
- Identify two ways in which secure and insecure attachment impact short and long term well-being
- Describe two ways they can support caregivers in building secure attachment
- Describe the tenets of positive discipline and the short and long-term effects on children’s mental health and well-being
- Identify 3 strategies for preventing unwanted behavior in young children as well as 3 strategies to intervene when unwanted behavior occurs
