FAIMH presents...

Our inaugural bilingual (English/Spanish) Reflective Supervision/Consultation (RS/C) group!

What: Reflective supervision is a supervisory approach that emphasizes relationships. The relationship between the supervisor and the supervisee as well as between the supervisee and the individual(s) being served (and sometimes even relationships with larger systems!) are considered carefully in the context of the work being done. In fact, these relationships often are viewed as the medium through which insights are fostered and changes can be made. Security in these relationships is critical and is built through consistent and regular meeting times, a collaborative approach to the exploration of issues, and an emphasis on reflection. By attending to relationships in this manner in the context of supervision, a thorough understanding can be gained regarding the impact that individuals have on each other and on the services provided.
Reflective supervision/consultation is required to earn the IMH Endorsement in Category 2, 3 or 4-Clinical, and must be offered by a FAIMH-vetted or Endorsed Reflective Supervisor. This group will provide 18 hours of Reflectiver Supervision/Consultation for Members aligning with Endorsement Category 3--Infant Mental Health Specialist or Category 4--Infant Mental Health Mentor. Read more about RS/C, and learn more about the requirements for IMH Endorsement.

How: Through this bilingual RS/C group, FAIMH aims to provide Spanish-speaking clinicians the opportunity to engage in reflective practices using their native language. This platform acknowledges that as bilingual psychotherapists, we are not only likely to encounter bilingual clients in our practices, but many of us are in fact bilingual or immigrants ourselves. I know by experience that sometimes we might need to switch between languages, we need to navigate the challenge that some words cannot be translated or have a different affective meaning in English, and we might experience an interplay between our native and our adopted cultures. Please join us in creating a flexible and culturally humble space where we can reflect and learn together about the work that we do to support children ages 0-5 and their families.

Endorsed Reflective Supervisor:  Heidy Garcia, LMHC, IMH-E
Heidy Garcia is a licensed mental health counselor working with children, adolescents, and families since 2002. She is originally from the Dominican Republic, where she received her Master’s Degree in Marriage & Family Therapy from the Catholic University of Santo Domingo in 2002. Heidy obtained Endorsement® as an Infant Mental Health Mentor-Clinical in 2019 through the Florida Association For Infant Mental Health (FAIMH). Heidy is currently a Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) Trainer apprentice in Florida and serves as an Advisor and Reviewer for the FAIMH Endorsement® process.

Heidy has lived in Florida since 2006 playing a leadership role in important community mental health agencies on the Treasure Coast. Before living in Florida, Heidy had a successful private practice in the Dominican Republic helping children and adolescents exhibiting challenging behaviors, and worked for 5 years in a Drug & Steroid Use Prevention Program for the Minor Leagues of Major League Baseball. Heidy is the founder of Hope Valley Resource Center, INC. and the co-founder of the Infant Mental Health Institute. She also co-founded and directed the Infant Mental Health Program for Tykes & Teens, a leading not-for-profit children's mental health provider in Florida.

Heidy continues to play a key role in developing and expanding services for young children and their families in Florida. She has extensive training in Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), Play Therapy, and Circle of Security Parenting which are evidence-based interventions to help children ages 0-5 and their main caregivers. In addition, Heidy is trained in EMDR and is in the process of completing certifications in clinical sex therapy and psychodrama. She is passionate about helping children, adolescents and families bounce back from traumatic experiences by increasing their sense of safety, strengthening their level of emotional connection, and giving a voice to those who can’t find theirs.  Heidy is fluent in English & Spanish. Heidy is also in charge of the International Program for the Infant Mental Health Institute and will launch this program in her native Dominican Republic in 2022. She views this as a way to give back to her country of origin to help improve the care of children 0-5 years old on the island.
